August Georg Simpert
Margrave August Georg Simpert of Baden (born January 4, 1706 in Rastatt ; † October 21, 1771 there ) was the last margrave of Baden-Baden . He resided in Rastatt Castle .
Life
Margrave August Georg was the son of Princess Franziska Sibylla Augusta von Sachsen-Lauenburg and Margrave Ludwig Wilhelm von Baden , who was also known as Türkenlouis . On October 22, 1761, at the age of 55, he took over the rule from his late brother Ludwig Georg . From 1743 to 1771 he was the owner of the 3rd District Infantry Regiment (Catholic) of the Swabian Empire .
Originally intended for the profession of priest and ordained a subdeacon, he became canon in Cologne in 1726 and cathedral dean in Augsburg in 1728 . After the death of his nephew, the Hereditary Prince, in 1734, it was up to him to continue the male line of the margravial house. With papal permission, he left church service in 1735 and married Maria Viktoria Pauline von Arenberg on December 7, 1735 . The marriage remained without adult children, so that the Bernardine line ended and the Margraviate of Baden-Baden was reunited with the Margraviate of Baden-Durlach to form the Margraviate of Baden after the inheritance contract of 1535 .
The achievements of August Georg's reign include: a .: school regulations, fire insurance and a widows' fund.
After it became clear that the Baden-Baden line had no male descendants and after the death of Margrave August Georg the Baden-Baden line would fall to the Baden-Durlach line, the government's last decade was characterized by inheritance negotiations with the Durlach line . Since the Durlacher were Protestant and the Badener Catholic, it was necessary to secure the religious freedom of the subjects. Therefore, the margrave referred to the long Catholic tradition of the margraviate of Baden-Baden and carried out the beatification of margrave Bernhard II of Baden . In memory of his ancestors and his beatification, he had the Bernhardusbrunnen built on the Rastatt market square. The inheritance contract with the Baden-Durlach line came about in 1765.
Margrave August Georg died on October 21, 1771. His body was buried in the collegiate church in Baden-Baden , his heart in the princely chapel of the Lichtenthal monastery .
