Margrave Ludwig Georg of Baden-Baden

Ludwig Georg Simpert of Baden-Baden (born June 7, 1702 in Ettlingen , † October 22, 1761 in Rastatt ) was Margrave of Baden-Baden from 1707 until his death , but was under the tutelage of his mother until 1727. Because of his passion for hunting, he was also called Jägerlouis .

family

Ludwig Georg Simpert was the son of Margrave Ludwig Wilhelm von Baden-Baden , called Türkenlouis , and Franziska Sibylla Augusta , a born princess of Saxony-Lauenburg .

Life

On June 8, 1702, Ludwig Georg Simpert was baptized in the open air in front of St. Martin's Church in Ettlingen, which was burned down by the French . The young Ludwig Georg caused his mother a lot of worries during his childhood, he seemed to have lagged behind and only began to speak at the age of six on a pilgrimage to Maria Einsiedeln. Out of gratitude, the margravine in Schlackenwerth ( Ostrov nad Ohří ) had a chapel built based on the model of Maria Einsiedeln. So she called him the Hermit Child .

At the age of 16 the young prince fell in love with Maria Leszczyńska , the daughter of the former king of Poland, but his mother knew how to prevent a deeper connection through a pilgrimage to Rome .

Ludwig Georg took over the regency of his mother on October 22, 1727 at the age of 25, who had administered the margraviate of Baden-Baden after Ludwig Wilhelm's death until Ludwig Georg was old enough to take over the regency. Franziska Sibylla Augusta showed himself to be very adept in financial transactions and not only managed to pay off the debts of the margraviate, but also handed over a considerable fortune to Ludwig Georg when he took office. Franziska Sibylla Augusta retired to her Wittum Schloss Ettlingen after the transfer of power and devoted herself to the design of the castle and chapel.

Margrave Ludwig Georg did not achieve a great military career as his father had, he much preferred to indulge in his passion for hunting. From 1707 to 1731 he was the owner of the 4th District Infantry Regiment (mixt.) Of the Swabian Imperial Circle (1717 General Wachtmeister on foot, 1728 Lieutenant General Field Marshal), but during the War of the Polish Succession he preferred to hunt on his possessions in Bohemia . He returned only after 1735 in Vienna closed preliminary peace to the Vienna Convention on the back.

The strictly Catholic regent founded a Piarist monastery school in Rastatt in 1736 . The monastery school Patres scholarum piarum (lat. Fathers of pious schools ) was an order founded by José Calasanz in 1597 , which was confirmed by the Pope in 1721. The order gave itself the task of free instruction.

After his death in 1761, he was succeeded by his brother August Georg Simpert as regent of the margraviate of Baden-Baden.

Ludwig Georg was buried in the collegiate church of Baden-Baden , the burial place of the margravial family.

Marriages and offspring

In the summer of 1720, Ludwig Georg Simpert traveled with his mother to Prague, where he met his future wife at Frauenberg Castle . The mother agreed to this choice and traveled to Vienna to get the emperor's approval . Ludwig Georg Simpert then married Maria Anna von Schwarzenberg , daughter of Prince Adam Franz, on March 18, 1721 at Krumau Castle . As a wedding gift, his mother gave him a hunting lodge on the Fremersberg , as hunting was his great passion.

The first marriage had four children:

  • Elisabeth Augusta (March 16, 1726 - January 7, 1789), Princess of Baden-Baden ⚭ February 2, 1775 Count Michael Wenzel von Althann (July 22, 1743 - January 22, 1810)
  • Karl Ludwig Damian (born August 25, 1728 - † July 6, 1734), Hereditary Prince of Baden-Baden
  • Ludwig Georg (born August 11, 1736 - † March 11, 1737), Hereditary Prince of Baden-Baden
  • Johanna (April 28, 1737 - April 29, 1737), Princess of Baden-Baden

After the death of Maria Anna von Schwarzenberg in 1755, he married Maria Anna Josepha von Bayern on July 20, 1755 , who was born on August 7, 1734 and died on May 7, 1776. She was the daughter of Elector Karl Albrecht of Bavaria , who later became Emperor Karl VII. The marriage remained childless, so that the Margrave died on October 22, 1761 in Rastatt without male descendants.
