Friedrich Count Revertera von Salandra (born January 21, 1827 in Lemberg , Galicia , † April 28, 1904 in Brixen , Tyrol ) was an Austro-Hungarian diplomat and politician.

Life

The Catholic Revertera-Salandra family, considered conservative , originally from Catalonia , immigrated to Austria from the Neapolitan Salandra in 1771 .

Revertera-Salandra studied law at the University of Vienna in 1846/47 , became a civil servant in the Lower Austrian provincial government and took part as an officer in the campaigns in Italy and Hungary in 1848/49 . In 1850 he entered the diplomatic service and worked at the embassies in Munich, Berlin, Stuttgart, Stockholm and Paris. In 1859 he became a Legation Councilor in Saint Petersburg . After the German-Danish War in 1864, he served briefly as a civil administrator for Schleswig and Holstein . From July 18, 1864, he served as ambassador to Saint Petersburg until he resigned on April 14, 1868 because of differences with Prime Minister Beust .

In the meantime retired, Revertera-Salandra devoted himself to the management of his estates in Erlach and Tollet and in 1869 became a representative of the landowners in the Lower Austrian state parliament . In 1885 he moved into the manor house of the Reichsrat . He was heavily involved in the expansion and organization of the Austrian railway system as well as in Catholic social policy after the Frankfurt Katholikentag in 1882. Nevertheless, he rejected the Christian Socialist policy and its anti-Semitism.

In 1888 Revertera-Salandra was reactivated for the foreign service and sent as an ambassador to the Holy See . At the height of the crisis between the Pope and the new Italian state, he offered Leo XIII. a refuge in Austria on behalf of the emperor. In 1901 he returned to Austria.

His son Nikolaus Revertera-Salandra also embarked on a diplomatic career.
