Friedrich Engel-Jánosi (born February 18, 1893 in Oberdöbling , now Vienna ; † March 7, 1978 in Vienna; born Friedrich Engel von Jánosi , he wrote himself in his publications Engel-Janosi) was an Austrian-American historian.

Life

Friedrich Engel-Jánosi, son of the Austrian industrialist Moritz Engel de Jánosi, had Hungarian-Jewish roots, but was baptized Roman Catholic. He obtained his legal and philosophical doctorate, and in 1929 his habilitation took place.

After the annexation of Austria , he had to emigrate to Cambridge in 1939 and then went to Baltimore . From 1942 he taught in Washington, DC , in 1959 he returned to Vienna and held a professorship at the University of Vienna until 1969 . On February 22, 1978 he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Salzburg . Since 1973 he was a corresponding member of the British Academy .

Friedrich Engel-Jánosi was a grandson of Adolph Engel de Jánosi and the nephew of Josef Engel de Jánosi and Alexander Engel de Jánosi.
