Life
The son of the lawyer Albert Reichmann began a commercial apprenticeship in Berlin at the request of his parents , but soon devoted himself exclusively to his musical training. He took singing lessons from Johann Elßler , Eduard Mantius and Johann Reß . In 1869 Reichmann made his debut at the Magdeburg City Theater as Ottokar in Weber's Freischütz . He then had engagements in Rotterdam , Cologne and Strasbourg . From 1872 to 1875 he was at the Hamburg City Theater , then until 1883 at the Munich Court Theater .
In 1881 Reichmann made his debut at the Vienna Court Opera , whose ensemble he was a member from 1883 to 1889 and from 1893 to 1903. From 1889 to 1891 he was engaged at the Berlin Kroll Opera and the Metropolitan Opera in New York City . From 1882 to 1902 he had regular appearances at the Bayreuth Festival . At the first performance of Parsifal in 1882 he sang Amfortas.
In 1888 Reichmann was appointed chamber singer. He was awarded the Franz Joseph Order , among others . In Vienna, Reichmanngasse is named after him.
Theodor Reichmann had been suffering from a heart condition for a long time and died on May 22, 1903 - Richard Wagner's 90th birthday - in the Marbach sanatorium on Lake Constance after a stroke. He was buried in Berlin on Cemetery III of the Jerusalem and New Churches in front of the Hallesches Tor . In the preserved lattice grave complex there is a multi-level grave monument made of black granite, on which the marble sculpture of a mourner is leaning, created around 1904 in the stonemasonry workshop Wilhelm Sipperling. A medallion with the portrait of the dead man has been lost.
