Caldono is a municipality ( municipio ) in the department of Cauca in Colombia .

geography

Caldono is located in the Provincia de Oriente in Cauca at an altitude of 1800  m above sea level. NN , 67 km from Popayán in the Central Cordillera of the Colombian Andes . The area of ​​the municipality is mountainous and is crossed by the Ovejas River . The municipality borders on Jambaló in the east , Piendamó in the west, Santander de Quilichao in the north and Silvia in the south .

The municipality of Caldono has 34,132 inhabitants, of which 1498 live in the urban part (cabecera municipal) of the municipality (as of 2019).

history

The region of today's Caldono was settled by Paez indigenous people from the middle of the 16th century . The place itself was founded in 1730.

economy

The main industry in Caldono is agriculture . In particular, coffee , cassava , bananas and the fique plant are grown for the production of natural fibers .
