Vale is a town ( city ) and the county seat of Malheur County in the US state of Oregon .

location

Vale is located in the north of Malheur County on the Malheur River about 25 kilometers west of its confluence with the Snake River near Ontario (Oregon) at an altitude of 684 meters. In the city, US Highways 20 and 26 share the same route from Nyssa : US Highway 20 continues to the southwest, US Highway 26 to the northwest.

The city has an area of ​​2.94 km², excluding land.

history

Vale was the first stop for settlers traveling on the Oregon Trail after arriving in Oregon. In 1883 a post office was built. In 1889 the place was incorporated as a town , and in 1905 it was elevated to a city .

Demographics

According to the United States Census 2010 , Vale had 1,874 inhabitants, of which 947 were men and 927 were women. 597 residents were under 20 years old, 307 were 65 or older.

Historic Places

There are five properties in Vale that are listed on the National Register of Historic Places . Four of them are historic buildings from before or around 1900. The Oregon Trail Historic District 8 km southeast of the village is reminiscent of the settler trains of the 19th century.
