Guapi is a municipality ( municipio ) in the department of Cauca in Colombia .
geography
Guapi is located in the west of Cauca in the Provincia de Occidente at the mouth of the Río Guapi in the Pacific . The municipality borders in the north of the Pacific and Timbiquí , in the east Timbiquí and Argelia , in the south Santa Bárbara and El Charco in the Departamento de Nariño and in the west the Pacific. The island of Gorgona belongs to Guapi .

The municipality of Guapi has 29,989 inhabitants, of which 18,406 live in the urban part (cabecera municipal) of the municipality (as of 2019). Guapi is the seat of the Guapi Apostolic Vicariate .
history
The Spaniards reached the Colombian Pacific coast in the 16th century in search of gold and brought African slaves with them to mine the gold. Guapi was founded in 1772 by the Spaniard Manuel de Valverde. It was named after the indigenous people of the Gua-píes living in the region . In the 19th century, Guapi suffered from the various civil wars in Colombia. In addition, the place was hit by an earthquake in 1833 and a conflagration in 1914. Guapi was the capital of the former Micay Province and is still the legal, political and economic center of the region today.
