Christian Julius Wilhelm Schiede
Christian Julius Wilhelm Schiede (born February 3, 1798 in Kassel , † December 1836 in Mexico ) was a German doctor , botanist and author. Its official botanical author's abbreviation is " Schiede ".
Live and act
Schiede studied natural sciences and medicine at the universities of Berlin and Göttingen . He received his doctorate in Göttingen in 1825. He then practiced in Kassel.
Schiede first traveled to Mexico with the Berlin gardener Ferdinand Deppe in 1826 . The two traveled repeatedly to Mexico in 1828. After staying in Jalapa from July 1828 , they explored the state of Veracruz . Schiede introduced many Mexican plant species to Europe. Schiede and Deppe also traded in natural finds, which they sold to European museums in Berlin and Vienna, among others, to collectors and dealers. The objects were described in price lists. Since this joint venture did not pay off, they ceased business operations in the late summer of 1830.
While Deppe left Mexico again, Schiede decided to stay and practiced as a doctor in Mexico, where he died of typhus in 1836.
Among other things, Diederich Franz Leonhard von Schlechtendal described plants from the collections of Schiede and Deppe from Mexico between 1824 and 1829.
