Diederich Franz Leonhard Schlechtendal , von Schlechtendal since 1786 , (born November 27, 1794 in Xanten , † October 12, 1866 in Halle (Saale) ) was a German botanist . Its official botanical author's abbreviation is “ Schltdl. "; earlier the abbreviation “ Bad. " in use.

His parents moved with him to Berlin in 1798 , where his father Diederich Friedrich Carl von Schlechtendal (1767–1842) worked as city court director and police chief. After he had been discharged prematurely from military service due to "physical uselessness", von Schlechtendal studied medicine in Berlin, specializing in the "auxiliary science" of botany . In 1819 he was with the dissertation Animadversiones Botanicae in Ranunculeas candollii Dr. med. PhD.

From 1819 to 1833 he was curator of the Royal Herbarium .

In 1826 he completed his habilitation as a private lecturer at the Berlin Faculty of Philosophy; previously he was awarded an honorary doctorate by Bonn. In 1827 he was appointed associate professor. From 1833 he was a full professor of botany in Halle (Saale) as the successor to Kurt Sprengel , who died in 1833 ; at the same time he was appointed director of the Halle Botanical Garden . He kept both positions throughout his life. In 1834 he was accepted as a corresponding member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences .

He published the Linnaea from 1826 to 1866 and, together with Hugo von Mohl, the Botanische Zeitung from 1843 to 1866 .

He died of pneumonia .

A large part of his literary activities was the description of collections of plants that were sent to him by travelers. Among other things, he described plants from the collections of Christian Julius Wilhelm Schiede and Ferdinand Deppe from Mexico between 1824 and 1829.

He was married to Ida Amalie Henriette Schlechtendal, b. Klug (1804–?), Daughter of Johann Christoph Friedrich Klug (1775–1856), a German doctor, entomologist and director of the Natural History Museum in Berlin. Schlechtendal named the plant genus Klugia Schltdl after her and her father in 1833 . from the family of Gesneriad (Gesneriaceae).

His youngest son Dietrich Hermann Reinhard von Schlechtendal (1834–1916) was initially a surveyor and surveyor and later worked as a botanist, entomologist and paleontologist in Halle (Saale).

Honors

The genus Schlechtendalia Less. from the sunflower family (Asteraceae) has been named after him. The botanical journal Schlechtendalia , published since 1998 by the “Institute for Geobotany and Botanical Garden of the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg”, was named in his honor.
