Hugo Mohl , von Mohl since 1843 , (born April 8, 1805 in Stuttgart , † April 1, 1872 in Tübingen ) was a Württemberg , German botanist , doctor and university professor. Its official botanical author's abbreviation is " Mohl ". Mohl is considered to be the discoverer of the core division .

Live and act

From 1823 Mohl studied medicine at the Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen , then went on to become a Dr. med. at the University of Munich , where he worked as assistant to Carl von Martius on the anatomy of the fern, cycade and palm trunks (1832). In 1835 he became professor of physiology at the University of Bern . In 1835 he was appointed full professor of botany in Tübingen, where he worked until his death. In 1832 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina , in 1857 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . He was also a corresponding member of the Académie des Sciences in Paris since 1838 , of the Prussian Academy of Sciences since 1847, of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Saint Petersburg since 1854 and of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences since 1861 . He was a member of the Royal Society since 1868 as a Foreign Member . The Royal Society of Edinburgh accepted him as an Honorary Fellow in 1870 .

His scientific investigations extended to almost all areas of botany, but above all he promoted the anatomy of plants and made the solid cellulose structure of the plants the subject of detailed and successful investigations.

Also, physiology and evolution has been promoted by him. Mohl distinguished the primordial tube in 1844 and recognized the protoplasm in 1846 , which he assigned the name that is still common today.

Hugo von Mohl's plant collections now form part of the Herbarium Tubingense (TUB) of the University of Tübingen and are managed by the Museum of the University of Tübingen MUT .

The parents were the Württemberg jurist and politician Benjamin Ferdinand von Mohl (1766-1845) and his wife Louisa Friederica Autenrieth (1776-1843). She was a sister of Johann Heinrich Ferdinand Autenrieth , Chancellor of the University of Tübingen. Mohl's brothers were: Robert von Mohl , Julius Mohl and Moritz Mohl .

A number of important treatises are collected in his " Mixed writings on botanical content " (1845). He also made contributions to the Palmenwerk Historia naturalis Palmarum by Carl Friedrich Philipp von Martius . From 1843 he published the Botanische Zeitung with Diederich von Schlechtendal .
