Wilhelm Elias of Ahles

Wilhelm Elias von Ahles (born September 2, 1829 in Neckarburken near Mosbach , † August 29, 1900 in Stuttgart ) was a German botanist . Its botanical author abbreviation is " Ahles ".

Life

After studying natural sciences in Heidelberg , Zurich and Jena , Ahles initially worked as a teacher at the grammar school and later as a private lecturer in Heidelberg. In 1866 he followed a call to the Polytechnic School Stuttgart (from 1890 Technical University) as professor for botany and pharmacognosy . In addition, he gave lectures on botany at the royal Württemberg veterinary school in Stuttgart and was for a long time chairman of the pharmaceutical examination commission. On April 12, 1876 , Ahles was elected a member of the Leopoldina , was awarded the Knight's Cross First Class of the Order of the Württemberg Crown in 1881 and was Rector of the Technical University in 1895/96 . He was also a co-founder and chairman of the Württemberg horticultural association, which had existed since 1878. In 1899, at the age of 70, he resigned from all his offices and dignities.

In addition to articles in specialist journals, his literary work also included the renewal of textbooks, he took care of the 7th edition of Seubert's textbook on all of botany and the 5th edition of Seubert's Outline of Botany , as well as the publication of botanical blackboards.

Honors

The lichen genus Ahlesia Fuckel is named after him.
