Jules Bourcier described the blue-shouldered Andean hummingbird under the name Trochilus Prunellei . The type specimen came from the area around Facatativá . Later it was assigned to the genus Coeligena . This word is derived from the Latin words "coelum or caelum" for "heaven" and "genus" for "descendant". The art is dedicated to Clément François Victor Gabriel Prunelle (1774–1853).
