Habitat

The bird is rarely found in open forests. It prefers to live in dense undergrowth or in the Andean páramo near the tree line . The white-tipped glossy tail lives as a resident bird on rocky mountain slopes at altitudes between 2700 and 3600 meters.

behavior

Usually you can see the hummingbird alone on flowers sucking up nectar. He usually holds on to this. It also feeds on small insects. The behavior of the bird can be described as territorial and aggressive. The males behave polygamously. Depending on the area, there are different breeding seasons (either September or mid-July). The females hatch their eggs without the assistance of the males. The female also takes care of the nestlings.

Subspecies

Distribution area of the black panties

So far, two subspecies are known.

  • Chalcostigma herrani herrani ( Delattre & Bourcier , 1846)
  • Chalcostigma herrani tolimae Kleinschmidt , 1927

The subspecies tolimae is found in the central Andes of Colombia on the Nevado del Tolima . The subspecies herrani occurs in the western Andes of Colombia from the Munchique National Park to Nariño . You can also find the ssp. on both sides of the mountain slopes from Ecuador to Piura in northern Peru.

Etymology and history of research

The white-tipped glossy tail was first discovered near Pasto in what was then the viceroyalty of New Granada . Adolphe Delattre and Jules Bourcier described the species under the name Trochilus Herrani . It was later assigned to the genus Chalcostigma . This name is derived from the Greek words "chalkos χαλκός " for "bronze, bronze-colored" and "stigma στίγμα " for "feature, marking". The name »herrani« is dedicated to the general and former President of the Viceroyalty of New Granada, Pedro Alcántara Herrán Martínez de Zaldúa (1800–1872). The type specimen of the subspecies C. h. tolimae came from the estate of entomologist Anton Heinrich Hermann Fassl (1876–1922) and was collected at an altitude of 4000 meters on the Nevado del Tolima . The name »tolimae« is derived from this mountain.
