François Louis Nompar de Caumont de La Force later François Louis Nompar de Caumont de Laporte, Count of Castelnau (born December 25, 1802 in London , † February 4, 1880 in Melbourne ), was a French explorer.

Life

He traveled to North America from 1837–41, and equatorial South America from 1843–47; From 1862 until his death he was the French consul general in Melbourne.

Castelnau wrote an important work in seven parts about his journey, consisting of a travel report in six volumes ( Histoire du voyage ) and several scientific volumes (maps, geography, antiques, plants and animals).

He founded the family of wrinkled beetles Rhysodidae LAPORTE in 1840 in the zoological system.

Dedication names

Jules Bourcier and Étienne Mulsant dedicated the name to him in the red-breasted Andean hummingbird ( Aglaeactis castelnaudii ) in 1848 , Alfred Malherbe in 1862 in the yellow-bellied dwarf woodpecker ( Picumnus castelnau ). Also in the subspecies of the crown tyrant ( Onychorhynchus coronatus castelnaui Deville , 1849) and the wedge- billed tree climber ( Glyphorynchus spirurus castelnaudii Des Murs , 1856) Alexandre Thominot named the Northern Velvet Gecko ( Oedura castelnaui ) in his honor in 1889 . Alípio de Miranda-Ribeiro named a soft-nosed ray species Raja castelnaui in 1907 , which is now known under the name Atlantoraja castelnaui . In 1911, Hemiancistrus castelnaui was a synonym for the armor catfish species Lasiancistrus schomburgkii ( Günther , 1864). James Douglas Ogilby described the new herring species Herklotsichthys castelnaui in 1897 , Pieter Bleeker the new pine fish species Opistognathus castelnaui in 1860 and George Albert Boulenger in 1911 the round-headed Nilhechtart Pollimyrus castelnaui . William Sharp Macleay's description of Heteroscarus castelnaui from 1878 is now synonymous with Heteroscarus acroptilus ( Richardson , 1846). He was honored with Nagelius castelnaudi ( Marseul , 1870) in a stutz beetle species and with Lucio castelnaui ( Kirsch , 1865) in a firefly species . Louis Hippolyte Hupé described several Muchel species with his name in 1857. He described Anodonta castelnaudii , a synonym for Anodontites trigona ( Spix & Wagner , 1827), Hyria castelnaudii , a synonym for Prisodon obliquus Schumacher , 1817 and Leila castelnaudii , a synonym for Leila blainvilliana ( Lea , 1834). Isidore Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire and Émile Deville described the silver woolly monkey ( Lagothrix poeppigii ) Schinz in 1848 , and in 1844 under the name Lagothrix castelnaui .

  1. ↑ Many publications name 1810 or 1812 as the year of birth. The name Louis Nompar de Caumont de La Force de Laporte can also be found again and again in literature. In his publication from 2012, Neal Luit Evenhuis pointed out where all this confusion about year of birth and name came from. He was born as François Louis Nompar de Caumont de La Force, it was only later that La Force was renamed to Laporte or La Porte and the title of count was adopted by his maternal grandfather.
