Sylvain Auguste de Marseul (born January 21, 1812 in Fougerolles-du-Plessis , † April 16, 1890 in Paris ) was a French clergyman and entomologist specializing in beetles.

Life

The Abbé Marseul taught at the Petit séminaire in Paris from 1833 to 1836, founded a college in Laval in 1842 and taught again in Paris from 1850 to 1853. On a trip to America in 1854 he became interested in entomology.

In 1864 he founded a magazine for beetle science, called L'Abeille (Die Biene), which was continued as editor after his death by Ernest Marie Louis Bedel (1849-1922) and René Gabriel Jeannel (1879-1965). In it, Marseul also published on the history of entomology in France.

He was considered an authority on stutz beetles (Histeridea) and dealt with leaf beetles (Chrysomelidae). Among other things, he named the tribe Tropiphorini from the Entiminae in 1863 .

His collection is in the Muséum national d'histoire naturelle and his library is in the Société entomologique de France , of which he was president in 1871.
