The stutz beetles (Histeridae) are a family of the beetles (Coleoptera).
description
The beetles are 0.5 to 20 millimeters long and have a hard, chitinized , clumsy, usually flat-arched and cylindrical body. They are often shiny and black in color. Some species have dark or red-brown spots. The shortened winglets leave one or two abdominal segments uncovered. The short antennae are 8 to 11 members, clearly angled and have one to three segments at the end that are strongly club-shaped. The head is usually retractable into the chest. Their legs are usually short, their tarsi either have five limbs, or only four on the hind legs.
Way of life
Stutz beetles fall into a state of rigidity ( thanatose ) in danger . The feelers and legs are drawn into the pits provided for this purpose. The legs are designed as grave legs, whereby the teeth of older beetles, especially the front rails, wear off significantly in the course of their life.
Beetles and larvae are predatory and prey on other insects and their larvae. You live z. B. in cadavers , excrement (e.g. four-spot jugglers ), under bark ( Hololepta plana ), on flowing tree sap, some in nests of birds, earth burrows of rodents or myrmekophil in ant burrows ( Hetaerius ferrugineus ) or in bark beetle burrows around here to pursue the bark beetles .
Systematics
Around 3,900 species and 330 genera have been described worldwide. In Europe there are around 314 species and subspecies, of which in turn 32 genera with around 100 species are native to Central Europe . 83 of them occur in Germany .
