Leonard Gyllenhaal
Leonard Gyllenhaal (born December 3, 1752 at Gut Ribbingsberg, Älvsborgs län , Sweden; † May 13, 1840 at Gut Höberg, Skaraborgs län ) was a Swedish entomologist and military .
Gyllenhaal enrolled as a student in Uppsala in 1769 , where he studied botany and entomology with Carl von Linné and Carl Peter Thunberg . Economic pressures made him drop out of his studies and choose a military career. He became a Trabant in 1773 , a lieutenant in 1777 and a captain in 1798, and in 1799 received his departure as a major. However, he had never given up his scientific ambitions and after his retirement he devoted himself entirely to entomology, mainly in the field of beetles .
His most important work is Insecta suecica, Coleoptera (Part I – III, 1808–1813; Part IV, 1827). He also wrote a large number of species descriptions in Carl Johan Schönherr's work Genera et species curculionidum and supported Carl Fredrik Fallén in his entomological work. There are also a number of smaller articles by Gyllenhaal. In 1809 he was elected to the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences and he was a member of several foreign scientific institutions. Among other things, from 1832 he was one of four foreign honorary members of the Société entomologique de France . In 1828 he received the gold medal from the Swedish Science Academy.
His descendants include his great-grandson Stephen Gyllenhaal and his great-great-grandchildren, the actors Jake Gyllenhaal and Maggie Gyllenhaal .
