Stephen Gyllenhaal [ 'dʒɪlənhɑl ] (born October 4, 1949 in Cleveland , Ohio ) is an American film director and screenwriter .

Life

From 1977 to 2009 he was married to screenwriter Naomi Foner Gyllenhaal . Their children, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Jake Gyllenhaal, are actors.

Gyllenhaal is of Swedish descent. His family belongs to one of the oldest Swedish aristocratic families. Ennobled ( ennoblement ) 1652, by Christina of Sweden , with the family name " Gyllenhaal " and the associated arms equipped. In addition to his work for the film, he has also made a name for himself as an author of poetry books.
