Monte Isola ( Italian monte 'mountain'; isola 'island') is the largest island in a southern European lake . It is about 9 km in circumference and protrudes more than 400 meters above the water surface of Lake Iseo in the Italian region of Lombardy . The Santuario della Madonna della Ceriola church is on the top of the mountain .

Monte Isola is a member of the I borghi più belli d'Italia association (The Most Beautiful Places in Italy).

Residents

The 1811 inhabitants (2010 census) are distributed over four larger and five smaller villages, which are administered by the municipality of Monte Isola and which also includes the two small secondary islands Isola di Loreto (in the north) and Isola di San Paolo (in the south). Other sources list three other villages for which separate census results are not available. The largest village is Siviano with 425 inhabitants (2001).

The administrative seat of the municipality of Monte Isola is Siviano in the north of the island, about 77 meters above lake level.

traffic

There is a bus route on the island, residents are allowed to use mopeds and scooters. Cars and trucks are only permitted in exceptional cases. Tourists are only allowed to explore the island without a motorized vehicle or by bus.

There are continuous ferry connections - every quarter of an hour during the day - between Peschiera Maraglio and Sulzano and between Carzano and Sale Marasino . These are also operated all night. Furthermore, all liners go to destinations on the island, so that there are boat connections every hour during the day in Sensole and Siviano. The liners operate between Iseo , Sulzano and the island towns all year round from early in the morning until late at night.

Attractions

Most of the tourism can be found in Peschiera Maraglio on the southeast side of the inner island . In Carzano on the east side of the island, an old village structure with narrow alleys and paths has been preserved, which has been renovated and maintained in an exemplary manner.

Every five years in September, the last time from September 14 to 20, 2015, Carzano celebrates Santa Croce . The whole place is then adorned with over 100,000 deceptively real paper flowers. The festival dates back to the Middle Ages when the plague spread throughout the region (except in Carzano). A gypsy woman brought her sick son to Carzano and he was nursed back to health there. As a thank you, the gypsy donated a sea of flowers. The festival is one of the attractions of Northern Italy and is visited by countless people, especially on weekends.

In June 2016 the artist Christo opened his artwork The Floating Piers . With this installation it was possible from Sulzano to reach the island at the height of Peschiera Maraglio on foot over 16-meter-wide jetties floating in the water. The work of art was only temporarily accessible until July 3, 2016 and was then dismantled and recycled.
