The Andean Parakeet ( Bolborhynchus orbygnesius ) is a species of the New World Parrots. It occurs exclusively in South America. Andean parakeets, unlike many of the South American parakeets, do not play a role in pet bird keeping. They were first imported to Europe in the 1970s.

Appearance

The Andean Parakeet reaches a body length of 17 centimeters. The plumage is dull green. The males' forehead, reins and chin show a slightly yellowish tinge. This is absent in the females. The back plumage and the upper tail-coverts are dark green. The outer flags of the hand wings have a bluish tinge.

The beak is greenish-gray. The dark circles are featherless and gray in color.

Distribution area and behavior

Like the closely related red-faced parakeet, the Andean parakeet is a parrot species from the Andes. It occurs in the high regions of Peru and northern Bolivia. In Bolivia, most of the specimens are observed at altitudes of 3,500 meters above sea level. Andean parakeets are known from Peru that still occur at altitudes of 6,500 meters. Andean parakeets live in pairs or in small schools. They eat seeds and berries.
