The red- fronted parakeet ( Bolborhynchus ferrugineifrons ) is a species of the New World parrots. It occurs only in a very small area in South America. The species is classified as endangered ( vulnerable ) by the IUCN . The current population is estimated at only 2,000 to 4,000 individuals. Very little is known about the way of life outdoors.

Appearance

The red-fronted parakeet reaches a body length of 18 centimeters. A rust-red band runs along the base of the beak on the forehead, the reins, the cheeks and the chin. The back plumage as well as the vertex, the back of the head and the neck as well as the wing bend, wing covers and wings are dark green.

The beak is gray and lightens to a horn yellow towards the tip. The bare eye ring is gray. The irises are dark brown. The feet are yellowish gray.

Distribution area

The red-fronted parakeet occurs exclusively in the central Colombian Andes. The distribution area is only 3,200 square kilometers and is highly fragmented. Most of the observations are in the region of the volcanic massif Ruiz-Tolima in the area of Tolima , Risaralda , Quindío and Caldas made. The national park Los Nevados is one of the main areas of distribution .
