The Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin , the Brotherhood of Knights or the Honorable People of Tastevin , is the French wine brotherhood in Burgundy , whose aim is to promote the image and marketing of Burgundy wines, especially abroad. Its symbol is the Tastevin , a historical wine tasting bowl made of silver. The seat of the Chevaliers is the Château Clos de Vougeot.

history

For economic reasons and because of the very poor sales figures for Burgundy wines between 1920 and 1934 and the consequences of a global crisis, the winemakers Georges Faiveley and Camille Rodier and friends founded the Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin on November 16, 1934. The establishment took place in the Caveau Nuiton of Nuits-Saint-Georges .

Both personalities shared the irrepressible will to massively promote the sale of Burgundy wines. Inspired by the legend of the Knights of the Round Table and the high culture of the Burgundian tradition (the modern age of the Dukes of Burgundy 1363 to 1477), both remembered the Burgundian bacchanals of the 17th and 18th centuries, which had already been forgotten.

Her idea of bringing wealthy people from all over the world to Burgundy, its wines and its traditions was a complete success with the recently introduced “La Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin and its Chapitres”. Burgundian customs, literature, music and the excellent Burgundy wines were from now on an integral part of the Chapitres for national and international wine lovers. The first North American Commanderie was established in New York as early as 1939, and New Orleans followed.

The Tastevin

Tastevin of the Chevaliers du Tastevin

The Chevaliers' tastevin (wine taster) is attached to a textile collar. The tape has a width of 40 mm and is two-colored. On the left and right the tape has a 15 mm strip in bright red. In the middle of the tape is a 10 mm wide dark yellow strip. The tastevin is made of silver and has a diameter of 85 mm. The depth is approx. 23 mm.

The tastevin is the old cup or the old wine goblet of wine connoisseurs and winemakers. The tastevin dates back to the 15th and 16th centuries. At that time, it was an indispensable tool for winemakers and tasters well into modern times.

The seat of the Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin is the Château Clos de Vougeot

The Château Clos de Vougeot has a walled vineyard with 50.97 hectares. Monks laid out the vineyard ( Clos de Vougeot ), which is enclosed with a cloister wall made of quarry stone, in 1089. The vineyard was undivided until 1889. Today around 80 owners share this area. The last monastic cellar master at Clos de Vougeot was the lay brother, Dom Goblet.

Construction of the château began in the 12th century and was completed in 1551. The château was originally built to house 2000 wine barrels. At ground level, protected from air and light. The Romanesque cellar, the column-adorned press house, is an architectural masterpiece. The Château Clos de Vougeot is the landmark and is known as the soul of Burgundy. The writer Gaston Roupnel describes the château as a piece of heaven on earth.

In 1818 the Château was acquired by the Ouvrad family. In 1891 the castle was restored by the architect Felix Voinnois. The owner at that time was the wine merchant Léonce Bocquet. In 1920 the Château Clos de Vougeot was acquired by Stephen Camuzet. Camuzet was mayor and owner of the Vosne-Romanée parcel . In 1934 the Confrérie negotiated a lease for 99 years. On November 29, 1944, the Friends of Clos de Vougeot, leading members of the Confrérie, bought the castle.

The château was badly damaged during World War II. The castle was rebuilt by the organization and friends of the Confrérie. In 1949 the château was classified as a “monument historique” and has been open to the public all year round ever since. At the entrance to the four huge wine presses from the 15th century is the sculpture "Porteur de Benaton" by the Burgundian sculptor Henri Bouchard (1960). The Confrérie has around 11,000 members on all five continents worldwide (April 2015).

In addition to the chapitres of the Chevaliers, private receptions and cultural events are also held in the château. The Confrérie does not have its own vineyards and does not produce any wines. She is the international ambassador for the fine wines of Burgundy. The Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin with its Grand Conseil (the great council) is a group of particularly experienced women and men who are all successfully involved in the national and international promotion of Burgundy wines.

The three famous people of Burgundy

The Hospices de Beaune wine auction is the most famous and traditional event in Burgundy. The sale always takes place on the third Sunday in November at the Hôtel-Dieu in Beaune . On this day, the young wines, which come from the various estates of the Beaune hospices, are auctioned off to the public. The hospices of Beaune are the Hôtel-Dieu and Hospice de Charité.

The vineyards of the Hospices cover approx. 50 hectares and are spread over the main municipalities of the Côte de Beaune. The wines are subject to the same legal regulations as the wines with the designation of origin. The wine label says Hospices de Beaune and the name of the cuvée. The young wine auction at l'Hostel-Dieu is the largest charity sale in the world. The event lasts three days; People come to Burgundy from all over the world.

Day 1

The wine auctions of the hospices on the 3rd Sunday in November can be traced back to 1850.

The enthronement (the accolade)

Before each Chapitre, the new Chevaliers are enthroned at the Chateau Clos de Vougeot. The enthronement (accolade) of the new Chevaliers takes place in a solemn ceremony and begins at 6:30 p.m. The ceremony begins with the sound of two hunting horn players. The master of ceremonies of the great council awards the accolade for each new chevalier with the following words:

Au nom de Noé père de la Vigne.
Au nom de Bacchus, Dieu du Vin.
Et au nom de Saint Vincent, patron de Vignerons.
Je vous fais Chevalier du Tastevin!

In the name of Noah, father of the vine.
In the name of Bacchus, god of wine.
And in the name of St. Vincent, Lord of the Winemakers,
I knight you Tastevin!

After the enthronement is over, two hunting horns sound again.
Note: Saint Vincent = the patron saint of winemakers; Noah = father of the vine; Bacchus = the god of wine

After the enthronement of the Chevaliers and before the start of the grand gala dinner, guests are served aperitifs and petite bouchée (Crémant de Bourgogne, orange juice, water, etc.) in the courtyard to the sound of hunting horns.

The Romanesque cellar has no vaults and was built in the 13th century. Here the Chapitres are held with 600 invited guests each. The following motto can be read in magnificent letters above the slightly raised stage:

"Jamais en vain - toujours en vin"
"Never in vain - always for the wine"

Chapitres

The first Chapitre is always at the end of January and is the "Chapitre de la Saint-Vincent Tournante ". The last Chapitre is the "Chapitre de la Saint Hubert" on the first Saturday in December. The members of the Confrérie des Chevalier du Tastevin can invite two guests to each Chapitre. The following national and international guests take part in the Chapitres:

You will be chosen as Chevaliers, Grands Officiers and Commanders in a well-attended ceremony in front of all 600 guests.

The gala dinner consists of seven courses. Six great wines will be tasted for this. (White wines and red wines). There is also the Crémant de Bourgogne Tasteviné, the café noir, le vieux Marc de Bourgogne (Eau-de-Vie) and the liqueur “de Prunelle de Bourgogne”. The Chapitre are organized in such a way that each of the 600 guests can complete the individual courses within max. six minutes to go on the table. In Burgundy, with the Chapitres, the dishes are based on the wines and not the other way around. Between the individual courses, small, amusing and interesting short contributions by personalities from the Confrérie are presented. These are essays about the wines and funny daily political topics.

Les Cadets de la Bourgogne

"La Companie des Cadets de Bourgogne" are among the most renowned folklore musicians worldwide and can look back on 85 years of history and tradition. The ensemble consists of 11 cadets (four tenors, four basses and three baritones), as well as the instrumental accompaniment with five musicians ( piano , clarinet , trumpet , trombone and tuba ). Forerunners of the Cadets:
In the 1920s there was a group of singers called "Le Cercle Rameau" who put on cabaret performances in a Burgundian vaulted cellar in Dijon. 12 of them sang under the name "Burgundian Singers". The artistic background of the Cercles was a degree at the conservatory and an acting training. The first known president in 1925 was Émile Bulliard, director of the Folard printing company in Dijon. The repertoire included French Folk songs as well as Burgundian drinking songs such as For example: “Joyeux defants de la Bourgogne” (happy children from Burgundy), as well as works by Henri Himbert - “J'écoute chanter le vin” (I hear the wine singing). In 1933 the tourist office of the city of Nuits-Saint-Georges commissioned the Cercle Rameau to take over the musical direction of exclusive public wine events in the future. With this offer, the Cercle Rameau was renamed the Cadets de Bourgogne based on the Cadets de Gascogne de Bergerac . When the Confrérie de Chevaliers du Tastevin was founded on November 16, 1934 in the Caveau Nuiton of Nuits-Saint-Georges, it was a matter of course for the Burgundian cadets to organize the evenings with the Chevaliers. The former Kapellmeister of the Cadets such as Henri Himbert, Henri Garnier and René Widiez was followed in 1992 by Jean-Bernard Guiboux ( conductor , choirmaster , organist and pianist ). Mr. Guiboux studied organ , harmony and music theory at the Conservatory in Dijon . He has been a member of SACEM (Société des Auteurs, Compositeurs et Éditeurs de Musique) since 1992 . This is the franz. Society for the administration of the rights of its artists in the field of music (like GEMA in Germany). From 1974 until today, Mr. Guiboux has worked as a choirmaster with the Schola Cantorum and the Dijon Philharmonic Society. He is also the first organist of the great organ of the Saint-Michel church in Dijon. For the Burgundian cadets, Mr. Guiboux created many arrangements of popular songs from the Bacchanal repertoire and composed several successful new songs. For example: Le Salut au vigneron, La Chanson des Bourguignon, La Chanson du Crémant de Bourgogne and In Vino Veritas. These songs, a Burgundian cultural asset, are sung regularly at events in Burgundy. Guiboux's compositions are not limited to just the Burgundy cadets. A large number of the works for piano, organ (church music, sacred music), choir, choir and orchestra are an important part of all compositions by Jean-Bernard Guiboux. From 1992 he led the cadets continuously into modern times while maintaining the Burgundian cultural heritage and its values. In 2000 the cadets came under the patronage of the Chevalier's du Tastevin. The Burgundy Cadets perform both at the 16 Chapitres organized by the Confrérie and at private events in the Clos de Vougeot Castle . In addition, there are performances on Burgundian evenings in London , Barcelona , Copenhagen and at the international commanders and sous-commanders in Tokyo , Hong Kong , Singapore , Beijing , New York , etc. Very big moments at the Chapitres are the musical performances of the numerous guests of honor who are with the cadets of Burgundy on the stage of Château Clos de Vougeot, delighting the audience. Among others : the cellist Yo Yo Ma and Ivan Karizna, the cellist Oliva Gay, the clarinetists Pierre Gémisson and Rémi Lerner, the pianists Michel Dalberto and Jun Kanno, Charles Aznavour , Julien Clerc , Fabrice Luchini , Nathalie Baye and Emmanuelle Béart .

The following CD's of the Cadets can be purchased in the boutique at Château Vougeot.

A song that is played several times in the evening between the menu courses (la la, la la, la la la la lère ...) loosens up the guests in their evening gowns and tuxedos.

The highlight of the evening is u. a. the chanson "Chevalier de la Table ronde."

The dress code:

With the acceptance of the admission tickets, each participant receives a postcard-sized drawing of how the evening wear of women and men is appropriate at these events.

A small, subtle hint why it has to be like this:
... pour le plaisir des yeux et l'élégance de la soirée ...
... for the beauty of the eyes and for the grace (elegance) of the evening ...

The events are over at around midnight. On the way home, the guests are bid farewell by the hunting horn players in the large courtyard. The Château Clos de Vougeot is illuminated at night.

Tastevinage

Explanation of the emblem
Explanation of the label

In 1950 the Brotherhood (Confrérie) founded the Tastivinage (anonymous wine tasting). Two tastings are held annually in the large Cistercian wine cellar. The spring meeting is usually in the middle of March, the autumn meeting usually takes place at the end of September. There are around 250 jurors. These are winemakers, sommeliers, wine merchants, buyers, representatives of cooperative cellars, restaurateurs and specialist journalists. Personalities such as the star chef Pierre Troisgros , the writer and journalist Bernard Pivot , Aubert de Villaine the co-managing director of Romanée-Conti and this year's (2018) chairwoman Jeannie Cho Lee (Master of Wine), on the occasion of the 100th tasting event on September 20, 2018, are on the jury. Around 700 bottles of red wine, white wine and the Crémant de Bourgogne , from around 180 wineries, will be presented to the judges. The wines and crémants that receive the awards at the anonymous wine tasting may bear the coat of arms of the Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin on the label of the bottles. The Tastevinage seal of approval (the Tastevinés label) on the wine bottles is a high quality feature for the consumer. It is the identification paper for the wines.

Literature Prize

The “Chambre des Arts et Belles-Lettres de la Confrérie” has awarded a literary prize almost every year since 1947 (Le Grand Prix Littéraire). In general, awards are given to works that have made outstanding contributions to Burgundian wine, Burgundian cuisine and the Burgundian way of life. This prize has been extended to the "Prix du Tastevin", which recognizes all measures in honor of Burgundy. Starting in 2002, the "Salon Livres en Vignes" will award the prizes in three to four different categories. The 1952 laureates were the authors Pierre Poupon and Pierre Forgeot . Both literature award winners have the following awards:

Awards from Pierre Poupon: Commandeur du Tastevin, Compagnon du Beaujolais

A quote from Pierre Poupon:

"... The art of drinking - like the visible arts and music - does not need translation in order to be understood in all languages. The realm of sensation is international. That is why art and wine serve to facilitate understanding between peoples. ... "
