Bernard Pivot (born May 5, 1935 in Lyon , Département Rhône , France ) is a French journalist , author and presenter of cultural programs on French television .

Life

Pivot is the son of a grocer. When his father was a prisoner of war in Germany during World War II , his mother took him back to the family home in Quincié-en-Beaujolais . Bernard also started school there.

After the father returned, the Pivots family returned to Lyon. From then on Bernard attended a Catholic boarding school, in which he only excelled in the subjects of sport, French and history. He graduated from the Collège-lycée Ampère in his hometown and then studied law in Lyon. In 1955 he enrolled at the Center de formation des journalistes (CFJ) journalism school in Paris and graduated as the second best of his year. At school he also met his future wife.

After an internship at the Le Progrès newspaper in Lyon, he studied business journalism for a year . In 1958 he became a journalist for the weekly Figaro littéraire . After this was closed in 1971, he came to the daily newspaper Le Figaro and worked there as an editor. When Jean d'Ormesson became General Manager at Figaro in 1974, Pivot left the editorial team and, on the advice of Jean-Louis Servan-Schreiber, went to his newly founded magazine Lire a year later .

Already in 1970 Pivot had conducted a daily humorous radio program on Europe 1 , which often addressed political issues that the then French President Georges Pompidou very often did not like. From 1973 he produced and hosted the literary program Ouvrez les Guillemets in the French first television program TV 1 . After the dissolution of the ORTF in 1974, he began the weekly literature round Apostrophes , which ended in 1990 after 724 issues. In the following year he began to present the current literary and cultural program Bouillon de culture , which was broadcast late in the evening for up to a million viewers until 2001.

Pivot is married to the journalist Monique Dupuis. The couple have two daughters.
