Vernoux massacre
In 1745, the Huguenot preacher Matthias Desubas , who had previously been arrested in Le Chambon and was now brought to Montpellier under strict guard, was to be imprisoned overnight in what was then Vernoux.
A large unarmed crowd of men, women and children had gathered at the gates of the village and demanded Desubas' release. They expressed their sadness, but also anger. Some of the people of Vernoux, who leaned toward the Roman Catholic side, felt they had to stand by the soldiers who had been harassed and shot at the crowd from their windows. 30 people died and 200 to 300 were wounded. These events would come to be known as the Vernoux Massacre . Some of the shepherds of the desert , as the leaders of the underground evangelical church were called, condemned the Protestants' attempt at revolt; Desubas in particular tried to calm the angry crowd. He was detained overnight in the local prison as planned.
The next morning an even larger crowd of Protestant Christians gathered, this time armed. However, Desubas managed to get a message across the crowd from prison: “I sincerely beg you, gentlemen, to withdraw. Too much blood has already been shed. I am very calm and have given myself completely to God's will. ”His request was granted and the crowd broke up.
Desubas was executed the following year. He is considered an evangelical martyr.
