Saint-Martin-d'Ardèche is a French commune with 979 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Ardèche department at the end of the Ardèche Gorge . The d'Ardèche in the name refers to the river.
history
Before the French Revolution, the village was called St-Martin de la Pierre, or in Provencal de la Peyre ; in medieval documents the small hamlet, inhabited by fishermen and boatmen and belonging to Aiguèze, is simply named Petra . The village is only mentioned as Saint-Martin itself at the beginning of the 16th century, when the bishop of the nearby diocese Viviers had a castle built not far from the village. To the place Aiguèze on the opposite bank of the Ardèche - d. H. to the Duchy of Uzès - so historically Saint-Martin belonged like the neighboring villages Le Garn and Laval-Saint-Roman until the territorial reform of the French Revolution: Aiguèze like Le Garn and Laval were then assigned to the Gard department.
In 1895 a stone bridge was built in Saint-Martin to reach Aiguèze all year round. It only existed until the flood in early September 1900. In 1905 a new suspension bridge was built that is still there (officially inaugurated in July 2005 ...). Dams in the Cevennes now calm the Ardèche and its wild tributary Chassezac .
In the late summer of 2004, the area was hit by a severe flood disaster. It had rained so heavily in the Cevennes for two days that several rivers ( Cèze , Gard ) rose to eight to ten meters within six hours. Medieval bridges were destroyed (Pont St-Nicolas near Uzès , so-called Charles-Martel bridge in La Roque-sur-Cèze ), towns and villages on the Rhône were flooded (Codolet, Aramon, suburbs of Arles, etc.). The river Ardèche only rose “as usual” - so Saint-Martin was less affected: a campsite was evacuated and three shops on the river bank were flooded. A total of eleven people in the Gard department were killed in the disaster .

tourism
Between March and November, Saint-Martin is a popular holiday destination for canoeists, cave lovers and hikers. Due to the damming of the Ardèche in the village of Saint-Martin, bathers are not infrequent. Canoe tours through the gorge can be booked from Saint-Martin; the passable section of the Ardèche gorge ends in the northern district of Sauze. The place has hotels, restaurants, guest rooms and several campsites.
The vineyards of the place are in the wine-growing area of the southern Rhône valley . The wines may be marketed under the designation of origin Côtes du Rhône and the qualitatively stricter Côtes du Rhône Villages .

Haven
From 1938 to 1941, the painter Max Ernst lived with Leonora Carrington in a remote farm in Saint-Martin-d'Ardèche. His former home is a listed building, but cannot be visited. Nevertheless, you can see the facade work carried out by Ernst from the street.
