Aubignas is a French municipality with 469 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Ardèche in the Region Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . The inhabitants are called Aubignassiens and Aubignassiennes .
geography
Aubignas is located in the hinterland of the Rhone , the mountain range of the Cevennes connects to the north and east of the municipality. The municipality borders on the neighboring municipalities of Le Teil and Alba-la-Romaine . The closest major city is Montélimar , ten kilometers to the southeast.
history
The discovery of fossils shows that the place was inhabited as early as the Stone Age. In ancient times there was already a Roman settlement with the name Alba Ignea , probably owned by the rich citizen Albinus. The place was first mentioned in 1275 under the name Albinacium .
In the 14th century, the administrators of Adhémar granted the citizens exemption from taxes on their property. At the end of the 16th century, the Protestants of Villeneuve-de-Berg conquered the fortified village. Traces of the old fortress are still visible today.

Culture and sights
Aubignas is an old, picturesque village with remains of the city wall, an arched city gate and many branching streets. At the entrance gate, a staircase turns over the roofs of the houses that line the ancient fortress. The Romanesque church from the 11th century is known for its apse decorated with alveoli .
The best view of the community is from the Plateau du Coiron , an old limestone cliff.
