Le Teil is a municipality with 8677 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the south of France in the department of Ardèche in the Region Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . Their inhabitants are called Teillois and Teilloises .

geography

Le Teil is located on the right bank of the Rhone , in Bas Vivarais east of the Plateau du Coiron . The closest major city is Montélimar , five kilometers east.

history

Saint-Etienne de Mélas church

Le Teil developed as a village around a castle built in the 13th century, which was destroyed in 1634 at the instigation of Cardinal Richelieu . Due to its port on the Rhone, the place was an important transshipment point for trade goods. A first bridge over the river was built in the 19th century, the current bridge is the fourth and dates from 1945.

On November 11, 2019, Le Teil was hit by an earthquake. Numerous houses - especially in the high La Rouvière district - collapsed, the church of Saint-Etienne de Mélas from the 9th-12th centuries. Century and other buildings were damaged.
