geography

The municipality is located on the high plateau of Les Gras between the towns of Bourg-Saint-Andéol on the banks of the Rhone , reachable in ten kilometers, and Vallon-Pont-d'Arc on the Ardèche , 15 kilometers away. It is located in Bas Vivarais in the southeast of the department.

Bidon is part of the Côtes du Vivarais wine-growing region .

history

Numerous barrows , such as the Champmerveil and menhirs , as well as the discovery of burial structures under the earth, indicate settlement in ancient times.

The municipality was part of Saint-Marcel-d'Ardèche until the end of the 18th century and only became fully independent in 1780. The communal forests became a dispute in the 19th century. The Count of Rochemaure sued the consuls because he wanted to cut down and process part of the forest. But the community was primarily committed to nature conservation and the habitat of many rare plants and animals and was right in court. The count then withdrew his complaint.

Sightseeing and tourism

The community of Bidon lives from tourism. The old village is popular for its narrow streets and ancient white limestone houses, as well as for its 19th century church. Large parts of the Ardèche gorges lie in the municipality, which can be seen from viewpoints such as Fort de Madeleine , the remains of the walls of Le Garn and the rocks of Castelvieil . The grotto of Saint-Marcel-d'Ardèche, which belongs to the municipality of the same name, is on the territory of Bidon. In 1228 Vierne de Baladun gave the area to the feudal lords of the place.

One of the main attractions of the municipality is the karst cave of Marzal, which can be reached from an iron staircase and houses numerous stalagmites and stalactites that have formed in the tunnel-like rooms.

The Grotte de la Tete de Lion , is a crypt that was discovered in 1963. Your interior is decorated with gold ornaments and wall decorations, as well as pictures. A contemporary floor was only laid a few years ago and supports the effect of the decorations.

Bidon also has several museums to offer. The Musée de l'Ardèche méridionale , illustrates the life of the country people from the early Middle Ages to the present day. It shows and explains architecture typical of the country, old means of communication, poaching techniques, former forest professions, ancient medicine and belief in witches. This involves working with photos, objects, exhibition models and reconstructions. The Musée de la Vie , on the other hand, shows the development of life on earth, from the Big Bang to the first manifestations. For this purpose, fossils are exhibited and slide panoramas are used. the house de la Réserve naturelle des Gorges de l'Ardèche , shows the visitors the geology, flora and fauna of the area. A replica of the gorges and animal reconstructions are used.

The Bidon forest is part of the Ardèche nature reserve, which was established in 1980, is 1,570 hectares in size and extends over eight different municipalities.
