history
Viviers is a medieval town on the right bank of the Rhone , south of Montélimar . The town is the capital of Vivarais and has been an important religious center as the seat of the Viviers diocese since the 5th century, with privileges granted to it in the 9th century by the kings Charles the Bald († 877) and Lothar († 986).
The bishop, who, alongside the Archbishop of Lyon, was the actual lord of Vivarais, fought for the country's independence until the annexation of Lyon by Philip IV in the 14th century. The south of the Vivarais with Viviers itself now recognized the sovereignty of the French king. In the 15th century, the bishops adopted the title of Count of Viviers , Prince of Donzère and Châteauneuf-du-Rhône .
