geography

The place is located in the Rhone valley on the right side of the Rhone on an old Roman road , today's Route nationale (RN) 86 between Valence (approx. 40 km away) and Montélimar (approx. 15 km away).

history

Cruas goes back to a Benedictine monastery founded in 804 with a fortified church on a ledge protruding into the Rhône valley. A Romanesque church from the 11th century, located below the old monastery, is known for its exceptionally rich bestiary in its crypt . In the apse of the church there is a Byzantine style mosaic, which commemorates the visit of Pope Urban II in 1095. The church, as well as most of the other historical buildings in the village, are made of limestone extracted from local quarries . The stones for historical buildings and castles in the area of Cruas also come from these quarries, and the cement industry in Cruas also goes back to these quarries.

economy

Cruas is industrially characterized by a cement plant belonging to the Lafarge Group and the nuclear power plant (Center Nucléaire de Production d'Électricité / CNPE) of the EDF ( Électricité de France ), which was planned in 1977 and connected to the power grid in 1985, with four pressurized water reactors with a nominal output of 919 each Megawatts (MW).
