Jean-Louis Bridel
Jean-Louis-Philippe Bridel (also Louis Bridel , born November 27, 1759 in Begnins , † February 5, 1821 in Lausanne ) was a Swiss Reformed clergyman , theologian and university professor and author.
Life
Bridel studied theology at the Lausanne Academy . After completing his studies, he was ordained as a pastor in 1784 . However, he first went to the Netherlands as a private teacher . From there he was able to travel through Europe with his students. Subsequently, as a supporter of the Helvetic Republic , he was sent by the Helvetic Directory at the end of the 18th century as envoy of freedom to the canton of Léman and the canton of Friborg . From 1803 to 1808 he was pastor of the French Church in Basel and, at the same time, from 1803 to 1812 Grand Councilor in the canton of Vaud .
Bridel took in 1809 a reputation as a professor of theology at the Academy of Lausanne and died there in office. He was an art collector and wrote a number of texts that appeared in the Etrennes helvétiennes .
His brothers were the author, local historian and naturalist and Reformed clergyman Philippe-Sirice Bridel and the bryologist, poet and librarian Samuel Élisée von Bridel .
