Houdan is a French municipality with 3640 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Yvelines in the region Ile-de-France . It belongs to the arrondissement of Mantes-la-Jolie and the canton of Bonnières-sur-Seine . The place is about 25 kilometers southwest of Mantes-la-Jolie on the banks of the Vesgre . The inhabitants are called Houdanais .

history
The old spelling of the place name is Hosdench . From the 10th century onwards, Houdan belonged to the Lords of Montfort and thus later to the Dukes of Bretagne , and thus came through the marriage of Anne de Bretagne and Louis XII. to the Domaine royal . Louis XV ceded Houdan to the House of Albert and received land near the park of Versailles .
