Limay is a French municipality with 16,820 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the department of Yvelines in the region Ile-de-France . It belongs to the arrondissement of Mantes-la-Jolie and is the main town ( chef-lieu ) of the canton of Limay of the same name . The inhabitants call themselves Limayens .
geography
The city is 53 kilometers west of Paris . Much of Limay is part of the Vexin français Regional Natural Park . The municipality borders Guitrancourt to the northeast, Porcheville to the east, Guerville and Mantes-la-Ville to the south, Mantes-la-Jolie to the southwest, Foullainville-Dennemont to the west and Fontenay-Saint-Père to the north.
history
The municipality shows traces of prehistoric settlement. During the time of the Roman conquest it was the tribe of the Veliocasses, a sub-tribe of the Belgians. In 1376 Charles V of France founded a Coelestin monastery here . In 1614 Maria de 'Medici had a Capuchin convent built here.
