Meulan-en-Yvelines is a French municipality with 8990 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Yvelines in the region Ile-de-France . It is located about 17 kilometers east of Mantes-la-Jolie , the administrative seat of the arrondissement of the canton of Les Mureaux .

As with Melun and Milan , the name of the place comes from the Latin : Mediolanum , the plain in the middle . To avoid confusion with Melun ( Département Seine-et-Marne ), the city was renamed from Meulan to Meulan-en-Yvelines in 2010 .

geography

Meulan-en-Yvelines is a small town on the banks of the Seine across from Les Mureaux , about 40 kilometers west of Paris . The commune is bordered by Vaux-sur-Seine to the east, Mézy-sur-Seine and Hardricourt to the west, and Tessancourt-sur-Aubette and Évecquemont to the north. In the south it is connected to Les Mureaux by a bridge. The municipality includes two islands in the Seine, the Île du Fort and the Île belle . Here the Aubette river flows into the Seine. The municipality is located just south of the Vexin français Regional Nature Park , but is associated with it as an access point.

history

Meulan was originally a river port with a Gallic trading post on the border between the Veliocassern in the north and the Carnutes in the south.

In the 10th century Meulan was the capital of the county of Meulan , with which the community was incorporated into the Domaine royal in 1204 by King Philip II of August . King Philip I died here on July 29, 1108.

Meulan's waters were the venue for sailing competitions at the 1900 Olympic Games and the 1924 Olympic Games .
