The municipality belongs to the arrondissement of Mantes-la-Jolie and the canton of Les Mureaux (until 2015: canton of Meulan-en-Yvelines ). The inhabitants are called chapetois .

Chapet is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Les Mureaux in the north and north-west, Verneuil-sur-Seine in the north and north-east, Vernouillet in the east, Morainvilliers in the south and south-east and Ecquevilly in the south and west.
