geography

Civry-la-Forêt is located in the south of the natural landscape of Mantois on the western edge of the Yvelines department. The municipality is predominantly agricultural. To the south is the Forêt de Civry forest , which takes up about a quarter of the municipality. The north-western border of the municipality forms the Vaucouleurs , a tributary of the Seine . The municipal area also includes the two hamlets Picotière and Bonneville .

Far away from the main traffic axes, the village is connected to the neighboring communities of Boissets (in the west) and Orvilliers (in the east) via Route départementale 166 .

history

The area was already inhabited in the Bronze Age. This is evidenced by the remains of a foundry and numerous tools from that era that were found.

The name Civry comes from the Gallo-Roman clan name Sevire . Originally Severicurtis , the parish of the village was called la Forest de Civry until the French Revolution .

A succession of dynasties ruled the dominion de la Forest de Civry : Raoul de Civry in the 11th century, the Seigneurs de Richebourg in the 14th century and the Famille Vialard in the 16th century. Even before the great revolution, the territory was bought up by Louis Charles de Bourbon , Count of Eu .

  • The church Saints-Gorgon-et-Barthélemy (also Saints-Barthélemy ) is located about one kilometer from the village center. It originally dates from the 12th century but was rebuilt in the 16th century after it was destroyed in the Hundred Years War . The extremely massive tower with its roof helm made of slate looks very defensive. The apse and the church tower were placed under monument protection in 1963. On the west facade there is a portal with a Romanesque vault dating back to the 12th century. The interior houses a brightly painted portrait of Mary from the 16th century and fragments of a leaded glass window from 1526, which shows Saint Martin , Saint Barbara , John the Baptist , the Virgin Mary and Joseph of Nazareth . Both relics have been a listed building since 1963.
