Épône is a French municipality with 6503 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Yvelines in the region Ile-de-France . It belongs to the arrondissement of Mantes-la-Jolie and the canton of Limay . The inhabitants are called Épônois .
geography
Épône is located at the confluence of the Mauldre and Seine rivers , about 45 kilometers west of Paris . Épône is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Gargenville in the north, Aubergenville , Nézel and La Falaise in the east, Maule in the south, Jumeauville and Goussonville in the south-west and Mézières-sur-Seine in the west and north-west.
The A13 autoroute runs through the municipality from Caen to Paris.
history
The hilly or not recessed Allée couverte de la Justice is a Neolithic gallery tomb near Épône-Élisabethville. There are other facilities nearby. In the Celtic times this was a settlement for the Celts . Tombs have been documented for the Merovingian period between the fourth and seventh centuries. In 845 the Vikings destroyed the area.
During the Second World War, the bridges over the Mauldre and the Seine were destroyed as well as the train station and the old château.

- Several megalithic systems ( Allée couverte de la Justice ) have been preserved from the Neolithic .
- The old church of St-Béat from the 12th century has been a monument historique since 1909 .
- In the green spaces there is a neoclassical pavilion, the Temple of Friendship, also known as the Temple of David, which has been registered as a Monument historique since 1947. It was built at the end of the 18th century.
