Rognes is a French municipality with 4735 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Bouches-du-Rhône in the region of Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur .

geography

The municipality is located 19 kilometers northwest of Aix-en-Provence . Neighboring municipalities are La Roque-d'Anthéron , Saint-Estève-Janson and Le Puy-Sainte-Réparade .

history

The municipality, which lies between the Trévaresse range of hills and the Durance , has been inhabited since ancient times. In the Neolithic Age, the first people settled in the south of the Chaîne des Côtes . In the Iron Age they settled on the Foussa , first in caves, and later they founded an oppidum . During Roman times, people settled on the plains, but in the Middle Ages they withdrew to the ridge. Around 1150 the village was called Castrum de Ruinis . The village was protected by a powerful citadel, which was destroyed in 1601. A large part of the village was destroyed by the severe earthquake of 1909 . As a result, people settled further below.
