Châteauneuf-le-Rouge is a French community with 2,235 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Bouches-du-Rhône in the region of Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur .
geography
The municipality is ten kilometers east of Aix-en-Provence . Other neighboring towns are Fuveau , Gardanne and Meyreuil . In the north, the Cengle plateau forms a natural boundary of the municipality, in the south this is represented by the river Arc . In addition to Châteauneuf-le-Rouge, the hamlet of La Galinière belongs to the municipality .
history
The village was first mentioned in the twelfth century. A chapel already existed at that time. Originally the village was called Négrel or Negreoux . The village was given the nickname le-Rouge in 1585, but the name was not officially used until 1778. The coat of arms of the village was rediscovered by chance in 1977. The new castle , namesake of the place, was probably the successor to a Roman castrum . For a long time the community was dependent on agriculture, including sheep breeding.
