history
The first settlers came to the Oppidum Teste-Nègre in the third century BC . It was strategically located, which helped residents defend the oppidum. Later the residents moved to the Oppidum de la Cloche , which they tried to defend against the Romans. In 49 BC However, it was destroyed by Caesar's troops. Some remains from Roman times were found in the place, probably the people traded with the neighboring Massalia. The Roman finds indicate a permanent existence of the Roman settlement, but the further development of the place between the 5th and 11th centuries is unclear. In the Middle Ages, after the creation of the Kingdom of Provence in 855, the place became a city again. The castle was also built at this time. Towards the end of the 10th century, the Abbey of Saint Victor was founded in the district of Plan de Campagne . In the Middle Ages the place belonged to different rulers, it finally fell to the Lords of Les Baux . Later the rule falls to the House of Luxembourgers. In the early eighteenth century, the city was ravaged by catastrophes: first of all, it was hit by famine in 1709, and in 1720 and 1721 more than half of the population died of the plague. During the French Revolution, the place took part in the campaign against food shortages and high food costs. The castle was looted. In 1907 the electric light comes into the place. It will take some time until there is running water there: by 1932, all households will be supplied with running water. During the liberation struggles in 1944, the tunnel that connected the city center with today's avenue François Mitterrand was destroyed.
