geography
Venelles is seven kilometers north of Aix-en-Provence . Other neighboring towns are Meyrargues , Peyrolles-en-Provence and Le Puy-Sainte-Réparade .
history
The area previously settled by the Salluvians became Roman in 15 BC. The Lombards besieged and destroyed the village in 574. In the Middle Ages there were two churches: one was influenced by the bishops of Aix-en-Provence, who ruled the village, and the other belonged to the Abbey of Saint-Victor in Marseille . In the Middle Ages, timber transports from Haute-Provence played an important role in the economy. Settlement of the slopes began in the middle of the 15th century. Agriculture was successful there in the 16th century, the main products being wheat, wine, olives and almonds. In 1540 there were only seven houses in the community, in 1728 there were thirty and in 1765 there were 124 houses. In 1820 there were 211 houses with 833 inhabitants. Since the road from Aix-en-Provence did not go directly through the village, two hamlets were created on the road, les Logis and les Logissons . The election of a new mayor in 1865 brought about many innovations: the water supply worked, a police station was set up and the town received a train station on the route to Marseille. The first public school was opened in 1882. The church and several houses were destroyed in a severe earthquake on June 11, 1909 . After the earthquake, the important buildings were gradually moved from Hoch-Venelles to Nieder-Venelles. In 1970 the municipal administration decided to move to the main street in the lower part of the village.
