The Shuja ( Russian Шуя ) is a 170 km long river in the European part of Russia . It is a left and the largest tributary of the Njomda in the river system of the Volga.

The Shuja rises in the southern Galitscher Heights in the western center of Kostroma Oblast , near the settlement (Possjolok) Loparjowo. It initially flows in an easterly direction through the wooded landscape. Shortly after flowing through the village of Bor, it turns south.

The Schuja now flows through a very sparsely populated forest area. The river is very winding along its entire course and has numerous oxbow lakes .

Hydrology and use

The Shuja is frozen on average from November to April, the breaking of the ice and the melting of the snow follow spring floods . There are further floods in summer and autumn. The river was previously used for rafting . It is not navigable.
