The Njomda ( Russian Нёмда , sometimes transcribed as Nemda from Russian Немда ) is a 146 km long left tributary of the Volga in Kostroma Oblast and Ivanovo Oblast in the European part of Russia .

description

The Njomda rises on the southern edge of the Galitscher Heights , about 4 km west of the Selo Palkino in the western center of Kostroma Oblast . From there it meanders strongly towards the south through the forest-dominated southwestern part of the oblast.

Along the course of the Njomda in Kostroma Oblast there are only smaller towns, including Kady , the center of the Kadyjski rajon . The Njomda is navigable below Kady, as from here the backwater of the Gorkier reservoir affects the river.

Shortly after crossing the border with Ivanovo Oblast , the Njomda reaches the Volga , which is dammed up to form the Gorkier reservoir . On the right bank of the estuary is the village of Savrashye , birthplace of the Soviet film director Andrei Arsenjewitsch Tarkowski .

The Njomda is mainly fed by meltwater and is frozen on average from November to mid-April.
