Vernègues is a French commune with 1,845 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Bouches-du-Rhône in the region of Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur .
geography
The municipality is located in the north of the Bouches-du-Rhône department. It is located 33 kilometers northwest of Aix-en-Provence and ten kilometers northeast of Salon-de-Provence . The two districts Vernègues and Cazan belong to the municipality.
history
In the 8th century there were two military camps in the area of today's municipality. One camp, the Castrum Alvensicum , was at the highest point. The old Vernègues would later be built there. The lords of Vernègues originally came from Piedmont . In 1442 the land was bought by Guillaume de Damian. The family died out in 1890. On June 11, 1909, the place was shaken by a 6.2 magnitude earthquake . Several places were destroyed in the earthquake, including Vernègues. After the quake, the place was rebuilt 90 meters further down.
