Vauvenargues is a French commune with 1,013 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Provencal department of Bouches-du-Rhône . The place gained fame as the place of work of the artist Pablo Picasso in the years 1958 to 1973.
geography
Vauvenargues is located in the Provencal Pre-Alps in the valley of the river Cause and its tributary Infernet between the mountain ranges Montagne Sainte-Victoire in the south and Montagne des Ubacs in the north. Vauvenargues is connected to the city of Aix-en-Provence , about 15 km to the west, via a country road in the municipal area of the Cause and the lake Lac du Bimont that is dammed up from it . In addition, there are only two road connections in neighboring communities, which lead over the mountain passes Col du Sambuc to the north and Col des Portes to the east.
history
The place is first mentioned in the 13th century, when the Vauvenargues fiefdom of the Counts of Provence passed to the Archbishop of Aix-en-Provence. A forerunner of Vauvenargues Castle already existed at that time, the current external shape of which arose from the construction of the two towers in the 14th century and the renovation of the outer walls in the 17th century. After the bishops of Aix, the Clapiers family , from whom the moralist Luc de Clapiers came from, took over the fief and castle until the French Revolution .
Pablo Picasso acquired the castle in 1958, lived in it until 1960 and used it as a studio until his death in 1973 . His grave is in the park of the palace, which is still owned by the Picasso family and has not been open to the public so far. For the "Picasso Year 2009" it was open to the public under restrictive conditions - 85 visitors per day.
