The first forty BYD-e6 electric taxis were introduced in Shenzhen City in 2010 . In the following year, on the occasion of the international Summer Universiade 2011, another 250 taxis of this type were deployed. After the end of the event, the vehicles were integrated into the city's regular taxi service. At the end of 2014, 850 BYD e6s were in use as taxis in Shenzhen .

Since May 2013 the model has also been used as a taxi in Hong Kong and since November 2013 also in Wuzhou . At the end of 2014, 45 BYD e6s were in taxi service in Hong Kong .

The world's largest rental car company, Hertz, has also added the model to its vehicle fleet. The vehicle is handed over with a fully charged battery, so that customers do not have to worry about charging for a one-day rental period.

Since the beginning of 2013, the BYD e6 has also been used as a police vehicle in Shenzhen; the delivery of a total of 500 vehicles is planned.

Belgium

Since October 2014, 34 BYD e6s have been in use as taxis in the Belgian capital, Brussels . The public handover took place in the presence of the Minister responsible for mobility, Pascal Smet . BYD u. a. prevail against the electric vehicles from Renault and Nissan .

Netherlands

The BYD e6 has been in use as a taxi in Rotterdam since December 2013 . The Rotterdam Taxi Center will initially procure 25 electric cars. So far (as of 2013) 500 charging stations have been installed by the city administration.

United Kingdom

A small taxi fleet of 20 BYD e6 has been on the road in the British capital London since 2014 .

United States

The vehicle was first presented at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit in 2009 and shown again there in 2010. The model was scheduled to hit the US market in 2010, but it is still not available. Experts also attribute the delays to competition from the US electric vehicles Chevrolet Spark EV and Tesla , which are already on sale , to the insufficient number of charging stations and to reservations by many customers about Chinese products. The company has since announced that it will initially focus on marketing the BYD ebus in the USA.

Colombia

45 BYD e6s have been in use as taxis in the capital Bogotá since September 2013 . The taxi fleet is part of the Colombian Biotaxis Project . The government, which has abolished import duties on electric cars, expects the import of over 2,000 electric vehicles in the following years.

The promotion of electric mobility is supported by the Clinton Climate Initiative (CCI), a program of the Clinton Foundation .

Costa Rica

The BYD e6 has also been sold in Costa Rica since the end of 2013 . Initially, it will only be offered as a taxi.

Germany

The BYD e6 has been sold in Germany and Austria by the companies Fenecon and Trafa since the beginning of 2016 . The cost is 50,000 euros plus VAT. The car is designed for commercial fleet use with a high range requirement. The vehicle is not listed in the environmental bonus program and therefore does not receive any funding.

Furnishing

All models are equipped as standard with air conditioning, leather seats, a keyless start system comparable to Keyless Go and - in addition to the usual front and side airbags - also with additional curtain airbags .

Technical specifications

The vehicle with a length of around 4.5 m and a hatchback is called a crossover by the manufacturer . An electric motor with 90 kW and 450  Nm maximum torque serves as the motor  .

The core of the model is the lithium iron phosphate battery developed by BYD itself . This recyclable high - energy cell (80  kWh ) is considered safe (no thermal runaway ) and environmentally friendly (no heavy metals or toxic electrolytes ). According to the manufacturer, the stored energy is enough to cover 300 kilometers with the BYD e6 without charging. The maximum speed is given as 140  km / h . According to the manufacturer, the car's lithium iron phosphate battery can be charged within two hours.

The standard equipment includes an anti-lock braking system with electronic brake force distribution .

costs

BYD calculates on its website that a BYD e6 as a taxi with a runtime of 5 years can save around USD 74,000 in energy costs alone, i.e. electricity consumption instead of gasoline consumption.

Accidents

  • On May 26, 2012, there was a serious accident involving a BYD e6 in the Chinese city of Shenzhen . The event was commented on worldwide. In German automobile magazines, the report quickly led to critical and in the tabloid press to a sometimes unreliable reporting on the safety of electric cars in general.
After evaluating the accident, the Chinese authorities stated that it was not an explosion of the battery but a short circuit of highly flammable substances inside the vehicle that triggered a fire. The ADAC also assessed the accident and generally sees no increased risk of fires in accidents with electric cars, as the energy system is decoupled early in the event of an accident to avoid fire and short-circuit reactions. In the accident, a Nissan GT-R drove into the electric car at a speed of 183  km / h . The BYD e6 was thrown into a tree in three lanes and rebounded there. The electric vehicle caught fire. The three inmates died.
  • In June 2013, a small charging station caught fire in Hong Kong. According to the manufacturer, a loose connection to the vehicle led to overheating and melting of the charger attached to a wall. After the accident, all BYD charging stations in the town were temporarily switched off and the electric taxi fleet in Hong Kong was shut down. In the previous year, TÜV Rheinland issued a safety certificate for the charging devices of BYD electric vehicles.
