BYD Company Limited , BYD for short ( Chinese  chines 股份有限公司  /  比亚迪 股份有限公司 , Pinyin Bǐyàdí Gǔfēn Yǒuxiàn Gōngsī , short: 比亞迪  /  比亚迪 , Bǐyàdí ), is a Chinese conglomerate.

The company is the world's largest producer of rechargeable batteries , especially for cell phones . In addition, a subsidiary is one of the largest automobile manufacturers in China; In 2014, a dedicated assembly plant was inaugurated in California for the BYD ebus battery bus .

In 2010, BYD was voted the world's most powerful technology company by the US business magazine Bloomberg Businessweek . BYD is the acronym for: Build your dreams .

history

The company was founded in February 1995 by chemist Wang Chuanfu as a small factory with 20 employees in Buji Town , a town in the Longgang district of the Chinese city of Shenzhen . Initially, only rechargeable batteries were produced, which competed with the then dominant imported products from Sony and Sanyo .

In contrast to the Japanese competition, the batteries were not manufactured by industrial robots until at least 2011 : Thanks to a very detailed and exact description of the workflow , the process sections in production could be reduced so much that even young people with little or no professional work Qualification have been discontinued. This allowed the semi-automatic production of batteries, the quality of which is comparable to the products manufactured by industrial robots: however, due to the low wages, which are considerably lower than those of Japan, they could be offered much cheaper. Meanwhile, however, BYD is also using industrial robots on a large scale.

From a western perspective, in addition to this low-wage policy , the tiring, monotonous fulfillment of tasks associated with this type of work organization , the high workload including long working hours and the lack of opportunities for workers to gain further qualifications were perceived. The Chinese government, on the other hand, pointed to the need to create permanent jobs for the millions of young , often unskilled, people who are pouring from the countryside to the big cities as China's urbanization continues . She also saw this as an opportunity to secure exports over the long term.

The resulting advantage in manufacturing costs as well as relatively high import duties for foreign goods in China enabled the company to achieve permanent growth; BYD has been the world's largest manufacturer of rechargeable batteries since 2000 . In addition, the company has the largest market share in the sale of nickel-cadmium accumulators as well as batteries, chargers and keyboards for mobile phones and is the main supplier in this regard to large manufacturers such as Nokia , Motorola , Samsung , Sony Ericsson , Kyocera and Huawei .

In January 2003, the company entered the automotive business with the purchase of the ailing Xian Qinhuan Automobile ; the production branch and the vehicles have been operating under BYD Auto Co. Ltd ever since . The company avoided the faster route of using licensed buildings from global corporations, instead relying on in-house developments. In 2010 over 500,000 vehicles were already produced. Today BYD Auto is one of the largest automobile manufacturers in China.

Since 2010 the company has been intensifying its activities in the field of environmental technology ; such as the production of solar farms and LED lighting technology for street lighting as well as battery-based electricity storage systems, which are also marketed in Germany. In January 2012 BYD put the world's largest battery storage power plant (according to its own information) into operation with 36 megawatt hours .

Group structure

The company is listed as a public company on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange , (HKEX: 1211) and on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange , (SZSE: 002594). On September 27, 2008, MidAmerican Energy Holdings Co , a holding company owned by US billionaire Warren Buffett , acquired a share of around 10% in BYD; the total value of this investment was approximately $ 230 million.

The company currently (as of 2014) has twelve production sites in China and one each in India, Hungary, Romania and the USA. Several subsidiaries are assigned to it; the most important are:

In addition to production facilities in China, the company also has a factory in Chennai , India, in Komárom in Hungary and in Cluj-Napoca , a technology park in Romania.
  • BYD LED was founded in Shenzhen in 2003 and has been mainly engaged in mass production of LED lamps for vehicles, signaling technology and street lighting since 2008 .
  • Shenzhen BYD Daimler New Technology Company , is a joint venture of BYD Co Ltd. founded in 2010 . with Daimler AG based in Shenzhen. The 50:50 joint venture developed a purely battery-electric vehicle under the DENZA brand name . Marketing of the vehicle began at the end of 2014.

BYD has four research and development centers of its own in Shenzhen, Shanghai , Beijing and Shaoguan , where around 10,000 scientists work. Two thirds of them are involved in innovation management, whose task is also to permanently monitor and improve production processes. A third work in product innovation ; Here, above all, new high-energy cells with reduced weight and space requirements and at the same time increased capacity (to increase the range of the vehicles) are developed. According to newspaper reports, several thousand electrical engineers and chemists are researching this project.
