The dam Big Tujunga ( English Big Tujunga Dam ) is a dam in Los Angeles County , State of California , USA , which the Big Tujunga Creek dammed. It is located in the San Gabriel Mountains within the Angeles National Forest and is used for flood protection .

Barrier structure

The dam during the expansion

The shut-off is an arch dam of concrete with a height of 74 m (244  ft ) above the foundation bed . The length of the top of the wall is 253 m (830 ft). The thickness of the dam is 42 m (140 ft) at the base and 6 m (20 ft) at the top. The dam wall has both a flood relief and a bottom outlet .

The arch dam was originally 22 m (73 ft) thick at the base and 2.4 m (8 ft) at the crown. It was built in the early 1930s.

Due to safety concerns related to earthquakes and extreme floods, the arch dam was fundamentally expanded and strengthened in the 2000s. For this purpose, a total of 57,341 m³ (75,000 cubic yards ) of concrete was added to the air side of the old dam  ; rock anchors with lengths of 13 to 21 m (45 to 70 ft) were also set. The costs amounted to 88 million USD .

Reservoir

At the maximum storage target , the reservoir holds around 7.35 million m³ (5960  acre-feet ) of water. After floods, however, the reservoir will be drained to 1.83 million m³ (1484 acre feet) as soon as possible.
