Pimp My Ride (Eng .: 'Motz my Karre auf', see also Pimp ) was a TV show on MTV that was about the tuning of old and mostly junk-old automobiles . The first episode aired in the US on March 4, 2004. The moderator was the rapper Xzibit . On July 22, 2007, the last season ran with eight episodes in America. For the time being, a new edition is not planned. "You should get off the stage when you are at the top," said MTV US.

procedure

Xzibit turns up "surprisingly" at one of the candidates in Southern California. He was allowed to apply to MTV to have his old car renovated and redesigned .

After Xzibit has inspected the car on site and learned something about the owner, he drives it to Galpin Auto Sports ( GAS ), which has been making the improvements since the fifth season. In the first four seasons, this was done by West Coast Customs ( WCC ). It's less about engine tuning than the appearance of the car, such as the paintwork, decorative rims and an extravagant interior. Often parts worth over $ 20,000 are built into the cars, including large chrome rims, flat screens and music systems , but also bizarre things like aquariums , espresso machines , steam irons , whirlpools and “ James Bond secret compartments”. These are in some way related to the personality of the candidate.

Finally, the candidate and the viewer are shown the changes in a before-and-after comparison. The candidate drives home and introduces the pimped car to family and friends.

Details on the dramaturgy

  • At the beginning and at the end of an episode, the candidate's family or friends can be seen. At the beginning it is emphasized how much the candidate deserves a car that suits him. At the end of the day, the candidate and the acquaintances realize that a new phase of life begins for the candidate through the car.
  • The names of the manufacturers of the built-in tuning parts are mentioned, whereby the candidate is always happy about the tuning parts shown. In some outtakes it can be seen that these scenes are sometimes repeated when the candidate's joy was too reserved.

Remodeling work

In the episodes shown, the engine is rarely repaired and in absolutely inevitable cases and usually replaced with a new one. Otherwise it is not shown whether further renovation measures apart from the visual changes are made. In a few cases, West Coast Customs did not convert the candidate's car, but bought a better-preserved (used) replacement vehicle of the same or a similar type, converted it and given it to the candidate. In one case, for example, it turned out that the car was welded together from two cars. WCC feared the car might break up. However, this was not communicated to the audience.

The conversion of a vehicle takes about 12 to 14 days (according to a PMR mechanic at TV total ).

An MTV assistant who worked at Pimp my Ride told Auto Bild reporters, “You know, the whole show is faked. MTV dictates the ideas for the fixtures. The WCC guys just have to make them look kind of real. And the gags that work only need to be held until the recording is in the can. And then the paintwork: fill the rust holes, paint over them - done. "

Offshoot

Pimp My Ride UK

A new program on MTV started in Germany in 2006 under the name Pimp My Ride UK . The content of the show is the same as the original, but Pimp My Ride UK is filmed in the UK . The host is the British rap DJ and presenter of the BBC Radio 1 Rap Show: (Tim) Westwood. The show has a certain comedy due to the dialect and behavior on the part of Westwood.

Pimp my bike

As a satirical response to the US edition, MTV Germany started the new program Pimp My Fahrrad on April 9, 2005 , which is about "pimping" bicycles . Most of the time, so-called “low riders” or “chopper bikes” are used as the basis for tuning, with parts such as rims with 144 spokes and petrol tanks from motorcycles being mounted on the bikes during the course of the respective shipment.

The series, which was only broadcast in the German MTV edition, is led by actor Oliver Korittke, known from films such as Die Musterknaben and Bang Boom Bang . This time, the part of the screwdrivers is performed by the employees of the fictional Hamburg company ElbCoastPsycles . In fact, it is the team from the Juniors Club bicycle shop in Hamburg.

The idea of the TV spectacle nominated for the Grimme Prize 2005 comes from Oliver “Junior” Richter, founding member of ElbCoastPsycles, and Oliver Kleinfeld, employee of the Hamburg TV production OKD Gute Entertainment! GmbH.

Together with ElbCoastPsycles and the Hamburg-based production company Riesenbuhei, OKD realized a total of seven episodes of the satire format for MTV Germany.

Pimp My Whatever

Another offshoot of the Pimp-my-… series is called Pimp My Whatever . The first episode was broadcast on October 15, 2005 on MTV Germany. In this series hosted by MTV presenter Patrice Bouédibéla , everything or everyone is pimped up, such as dog houses, parties and so on. The "Aufmotzer" are the ElbCoastPsycles . The things pimped up here work perfectly, according to Autobild. While the original received bad criticism there, the offshoots of Pimp My Ride are praised.

Pimp My Ride International

In Pimp My Ride International , the cars of candidates from Europe were "pimped up". In Germany the series ran from 2006 and from April 2011 on VIVA Germany. This version was hosted by rappers Lil Jon and Fat Joe . It was also moderated by Mike Posner . In terms of content, the offshoot was identical to Pimp My Ride or Pimp My Ride UK . In addition to the cars of normal young people, the car of the French soccer player Djibril Cissé , who has the financial means to buy an expensive car, has bet with GAS who will “pimp” better.

Pimp my Ride - The game

A game called Pimp my Ride has also been available for Wii and PlayStation Portable since 2007 . In the game you have to "pimp" customers' cars. Few customers are available at the start of the game. Over time, however, there are more and more until you can finally pimp the car from Xzibit, who also goes to the customers in the game and inspects the car. You only have a limited time of about two minutes per car to pimp it; when this time is up, the customer must choose between the player's car and that of a rival. A freely navigable city is also available. The game has a PEGI rating of 12+.

In the commercial

In addition to their use in the title of MTV programs, numerous variations of Pimp my ... have long been part of the slogans of the advertising industry in Germany :

  • Burger King : Pimp my Burger (Promotion)
  • Chip and GIGA : Pimp my PC (PCs are "pimped up")
  • Volkswagen : Unpimp the Auto (promotion for the Golf GTI)
  • Berentzen : Pimp my handcart (former game on Berentzen's website)
  • Volksbank : Pimp my money (should appeal to young people)
  • Rheinzink : zink my roof (advertisement for zinc roofs)

Parodies

Also satire - and comedy shows parodied the phenomenon. On the show Jimmy Kimmel Live! On the American broadcaster ABC , the contribution Pimp My Bride (Eng. 'Motz my bride up') ran to match Xzibit's visit . The American hip-hopper Xzibit also hosted the show there. Later, the NDR broadcast a Pimp My Wife in its Extra 3 program , and two weeks later RTL broadcast a parody of the same name as part of the Friday Night News program . Hans Werner Olm parodied in OLM on the way Pimp my Ride also under the title Pimp my Alte in the figure of Günni Schwagalla . A clear parody also appears in the film Date Movie , in which the main actress Julia is pimped up in a pimp-my-ride manner.

The German computer game magazine GameStar also shot a parody called “Pimp my PC”, with the moderator Xzibit and his demeanor, the modifications and the exuberant joy of the candidate being joked.

In the demo scene, the group ate bit satirized the program Pimp My Ride with the 64k intro Pimp My Spectrum . There is also a popular online video called Pimp My Horse by Brandon Laatsch and Freddie Wong, which is also a parody of the show.
